97.3% pass rate on Quebec bar school exams for ƻ��Ժ Law grads, best in Quebec

It is with great pride that the Faculty of Law has learned that the ƻ��Ժ Law cohort earned top place at the École du Barreau’s exams for 2022-2023. A remarkable 97.3% of ƻ��Ժ Law graduates without preparatory courses passed the assessments, as did 100% of the graduates who took preparatory courses. This outstanding result was achieved in a particularly strong year, in which all law schools saw increases to their pass rates.

The Faculty of Law was once again ranked among the world’s top universities at which to study law by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Law and Legal Studies placed ƻ��Ժ Law 28th worldwide, up one spot from 2023.

Since QS introduced the ranking in 2011, the Faculty of Law has consistently placed in the top 35 institutions globally. The QS ranking is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, H-index citations, and citations per paper.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor François Crépeau, O.C., O.Q., F.R.S.C., Ad. E., has been appointed officer of the Ordre national du Québec. He will be handed his medal by Premier François Legault during a ceremony at the National Assembly on 22 June.

Admission to the Ordre national du Québec is the highest distinction conferred by the provincial government. Members are eminent individuals who, through their achievements, values, and ideals, have influenced Quebec’s growth and contributed to its renown.

Sa’ke’j Henderson is an internationally recognized authority in Indigenous knowledge, heritage, jurisprudence, constitutional rights, and human rights. He is the research director of the Native Law Centre of Canada and teaches Aboriginal law at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan.

Professor Dedek joined the Faculty of Law in 2006 as a Boulton Junior Fellow. Appointed as assistant professor in 2007, he became an associate professor in 2012. From 2012–2016, he served as the director of the Institute of Comparative Law. He has been the co-editor in chief of the American Journal of Comparative Law since 2014.

Dean Leckey joined the Faculty of Law in 2006, where he teaches and researches in constitutional law, family law, and comparative law. From 2014 to 2016, he served as director of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law.

Irwin Cotler, OC, OQ, PC, BA’61, BCL’64, LLD’19, has been named Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism by the Prime Minister of Canada. Professor Cotler is the first incumbent of this role aimed at preserving the stories of Holocaust survivors through younger generations, and working to promote and defend pluralism, inclusion, and human rights.

The Student Affairs Office is holding a series of 30-minute Exam Clinics for ƻ��Ժ Law students for a week. Staff will walk you through installing Examplify and doing a mock exam to check that the installation went correctly.

There are seven sessions for first-year students, three for upper-years, and four sessions for graduate students. Students are invited to drop in the sessions for their specific groups. Be sure to have your laptop or computer ready.

The BCL/LLB program will thus become the BCL/JD program. Jeffrey Edwards named to Superior Court of Quebec

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that the Honourable Jeffrey Edwards, BCL’86, LLB’86, was appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montreal on June 4, 2019. He had been sitting at the Court of Quebec, Civil Division, since January 2014.

Justice Edwards obtained both his BCL and LLB from ƻ��Ժ in 1986 before earning an LLD from Université Laval in 1997. He started teaching the law of sale and product liability at the Faculty in 1998, becoming adjunct professor in 2011.

The award was presented to Mr. Yücel by Gabriela Siegel and Sylvia Litvack, respectively grand-daughter and widow of Robert Litvack.

Before joining ƻ��Ժ, Peebles worked as Legal Counsel for the public sector team of technology multinational Oracle, in Toronto. He has completed a BA in Political Science at ƻ��Ժ and worked for the Institute for Research on Public Policy before completing joint JD and LLL degrees at the University of Ottawa and articling at Norton Rose Fulbright.

The Faculty of Law and the ƻ��Ժ Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL) learned with deep sadness of the passing of IASL Director Emeritus Professor Dr. Michael Milde, at age 87.

Prior to his academic career at ƻ��Ժ, Professor Milde served in senior legal posts at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for 25 years (1966-1991). There he oversaw the negotiation of a number of international conventions and protocols on aviation safety and security, the significance of which resonates to this day.

Juanita Westmoreland-Traoré to receive honorary Doctor of Laws from ƻ��Ժ

On May 31, the Honourable Juanita Westmoreland-Traoré will receive a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, and give the commencement address at the Faculty of Law’s convocation ceremony.

Westmoreland-Traoré is the first African Canadian appointed judge in the history of Quebec. She also holds the distinction of being the first African Canadian law dean after her 1996 appointment at the Faculty of Law, University of Windsor. In 2012, she retired from the Court of Québec and sat as a supernumerary judge until 2017.
